Xeomin® Philadelphia

There is a new product on the market that is very exciting for our patients seeking non-surgical facial rejuvenation. Xeomin®, recently approved by the FDA, is a liquid injectable that smooths away wrinkles and frown lines.

Xeomin® is similar to Botox® and Dysport®, which are also used in facial rejuvenation. Though its full benefits are not known, Xeomin shows promise as being a longer lasting treatment than its counterparts. It contains no additives so the body is less likely to develop antibodies that break down the effects of botulinum toxin type A.

  • About Xeomin®

Xeomin® is a botulinum type of injectable similar to Botox® and Dysport®. Xeomin® is called the “naked toxin” because it lacks complex proteins found in the other brands. Pure botulinum is less likely to be rejected by the body, so it is an option for patients who have developed reactions to Botox® or Dysport®.

Xeomin® received FDA approval in July 2011 and was an exciting addition to the cosmetic market for many doctors and patients. Xeomin® has therapeutic uses beyond its cosmetic benefits and is used to treat blepharospasm (abnormal spasms in the eyelids) and cervical dystonia which causes abnormal head position and neck pain.

    Xeomin® vs. Botox® and Dysport®

All three injectables share a basic makeup, being derived from botulinum toxin A. Xeomin and related products relax the muscles that cause deep worry lines in the forehead and around the eyes.

Xeomin® is more similar to Botox® than Dysport®. Like Botox®, it takes about one week to see the full effects of Xeomin®. Some doctors believe that Xeomin® will prove to be longer lasting than either Botox® or Dysport®, but a wider set of data needs to be collected to support that theory.

  • Xeomin® FAQs

    Who will perform my treatment?

One of our cosmetic doctors will meet with you prior to treatment and perform your injection. Our physicians are highly trained, specializing in cosmetic treatments. You can be sure that your Xeomin® treatment will be administered to achieve optimal, natural looking results.

    Am I a candidate for Xeomin® treatment?

Do not use Xeomin® if you:

    • have an infection in the area to be treated with Xeomin®
    • are allergic to any of the ingredients in Xeomin®
    • are pregnant or think you might be pregnant

What should I tell my doctor before using Xeomin®?

Only your doctor can decide if Xeomin® is right for you. Before starting treatment, tell your doctor if you:

    • have any diseases that affect your nerves and muscles. These diseases may increase your chance of side effects with Xeomin® treatment
    • are breastfeeding
    • are planning to become pregnant soon

Can any of my medicines interact with Xeomin®?

Be sure that your doctor knows the names of all the medicines you are using, including:

    • antibiotics used to treat infections, such as gentamicin, tobramycin, clindamycin, and lincomycin
    • medicines used to treat heart rhythm problems, such as quinidine
    • medicines used to treat different conditions, such as myasthenia gravis or Alzheimer’s disease

What pre-treatment precautions should I take?

As with all prescription medications, you should also notify your doctor if you are taking any over-the-counter medicines or herbal products. We recommend that you refrain from use of Aspirin, Ibuprofen, multivitamins. St.. John’s Wort, Vitamin E or alcohol for one week prior to treatment to minimize any risk of bleeding or bruising. Consult your primary care physician before discontinuing any prescription medications.

    What can I expect post-treatment?

You will notice a slight, temporary redness and elevation in the area of injection due to the Xeomin® fluid being injected directly under the skin. We recommend that you exercise your facial muscles in the treated area 10 times every 10 minutes for the first hour to enhance the absorption of Xeomin®.

You should not touch or apply make-up to the treated area for at least four hours post-treatment. Most people feel comfortable returning to their normal routine immediately after treatment with slight redness resolving typically within one hour.
