Frequently Asked Questions About Tummy Tucks in Philadelphia

Question: Is there more than one type of tummy tuck?

Answer: At Center for SmartLipo and Plastic Surgery, we offer two different types of tummy tuck: the Avelar tummy tuck and the awake tummy tuck.

The Avelar tummy tuck is also known as a mini tummy tuck. This procedure was developed in Brazil by Dr. Juarez Avelar and was made for excess skin that’s present after childbirth or weight loss. It combines both abdominoplasty and advanced liposuction. Combining both of these methods means the removal of excess skin as well as the tightening up of the skin that’s left.

However, this method is only for mild skin removal. When skin removal becomes more extensive, the belly button needs to be repositioned and there are possibly muscle tears that need to be addressed. This procedure doesn’t provide assistance with either of those things.

The awake tummy tuck was developed by Dr. Richard Goldfarb and Dr. David Silberman. It was created as an alternative for the traditional method that doesn’t involve the risks and recovery time of surgery. This method addresses both loose excess skin and separated muscles.

Question: What are the benefits of a tummy tuck?

Answer: Sometimes, there’s just no way to get rid of that excess skin around your midsection. Whether it’s stretched out from giving birth or you have extra skin after weight loss, diet and exercise may only be able to do so much. Tummy tucks reduce and tighten skin and can also support the increased muscle tone that comes from diet and exercise. Without the excess skin, you’ll be able to see those results.

Keeping up with a healthy diet and exercise routine will help you make sure the results of your tummy tuck will last. These procedures can help you with both your posture and core strength.

Question: What’s the recovery time for a tummy tuck?

Answer: You’ll be able to leave our clinic a few hours after the procedure is done under local anesthesia. However, we do recommend you take a few days to make a full recovery before going back to work or strenuous activity.

Question: Are there nonsurgical options for me?

Answer: We understand that a tummy tuck procedure may not be for everyone. We offer other procedures for body sculpting that don’t involve surgery. Laser liposuction both removes fat and tightens up your skin, while SculpSure and Viora Reaction just offer skin tightening. These procedures can all help you with loose skin around your midsection.
