What is Laser Hair Removal?
During laser hair removal, a pulsing laser beam is passed over the target area, without causing damage to the surrounding skin. The laser is used to heat up the hair follicles, causing them to be completely destroyed. It’s a permanent solution that doesn’t require much effort on your part, making it a convenient one, too!
The Three Growth Phases
Your hair contains three growth phrases. Multiple laser hair removal treatments are needed because your hair has to be in the proper stage of growth before the treatment can be done. The anagen phase is also known as the growing phase. It’s when your hair is actively growing and contains the most amount of melanin. This is the time when laser hair removal needs to be done.
The catagen phase is also called the regressive stage. Your hair actually shrinks in its size and stops growing during this time. Last is the telogen phase, also known as the resting phase. Your old hair is gone from the follicle and new hair starts to grow.
What to Expect From Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal is planned and customized according to each patient. We take into consideration hair color and texture, skin type, and the location on the body. Laser hair removal can be done in almost any location on your body. Popular areas include the face, underarms, bikini line, back, and legs.
At the Center for SmartLipo and Plastic Surgery, we use only the best high-end lasers. The Cynosure and Candela lasers are able to safely remove your unwanted body hair, no matter what your skin tone is.
A series of treatments will be scheduled over the length of a few months. This is because laser hair removal is only successful when your hair is in the anagen, or growing, stage. The length of each treatment will depend on the size of the area being treated. Typically, they don’t last more than around 30 minutes.
The laser is slowly passed over the entire area that you want hair removed from. This is a non-invasive treatment, so you should be able to go back to work right after your treatment is done. Rarely do patients suffer side effects, but if you have extremely sensitive skin, let us know before treatment. We can give you some tips for aftercare to ensure that your skin takes the treatment well.
