Varicose Vein Treatment Langhorne PA

Sclerotherapy An Overview

Spider veins, varicose veins, and reticular veins can be both unsightly and uncomfortable. Dr. Goldfarb offers sclerotherapy, a minimally invasive procedure, to treat these types of veins and restore a smoother appearance to your skin.

What is Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is the gold standard for the treatment of varicose veins. This procedure involves the use of Asclera®, an injectable solution that will cause the treated vein(s) to collapse and diminish in appearance after a brief period.

A typical treatment takes approximately 40 minutes, after which patients can resume most daily activities with minor restrictions for the first few days.

Common Risk Factors for Varicose Veins

  • Genetics
  • Age
  • Gender: women are at least twice as likely to develop varicose veins than men
  • Pregnancy
  • Overweight
  • Prolonged standing or sitting

Sclerotherapy What to Expect

Dr. Goldfarb or Dr. Shiloh will perform a thorough examination and evaluate your candidacy for sclerotherapy before recommending treatment.

Sclerotherapy can treat uncomplicated spider, varicose and reticular veins to reduce the appearance of noticeable or bulging veins beneath the skin. This procedure can also address the side affects associated with these types of veins: leg discomfort and pain, itching and localized swelling.

During the 30-40 minute procedure, Dr. Goldfarb or Dr. Shiloh will inject Asclera into the affected vein using a fine needle. This solution will affectively irritate the lining of the vein, causing it to shrink and become closed to circulation. The vein will become scar tissue that is slowly absorbed and eventually becomes unnoticeable beneath the skin.

Sclerotherapy FAQs

Is Sclerotherapy covered by health insurance?

No, many insurances do not cover sclerotherapy as it is categorized as a “cosmetic” procedure.

How long before results are noticeable?

Typically, patients will see results within a few weeks, with larger veins sometimes needing several months before they completely disappear. Dr. Goldfarb will discuss what you can expect based on your particular treatment plan.

Are there any risks associated with sclerotherapy?

Common side effects include redness and swelling at the injection sites, bruising, itching, tenderness, aching or cramping. Pigment irregularities called “telangiectasia matting” (brown spots or streaks caused by very small clusters of vessels that form around the treated area), may take months to a year to fade. Although extremely rare, a serious medical complication could occur such as ulcers, blood clots, allergic reactions to the sclerosing agent (which could result in scarring), or severe inflammation. If you experience any of these conditions, contact us or your primary care provider immediately.
