What Are Spider Veins?

Spider veins are usually purple, red, or blue in color and are generally not painful. They are, however, rather unattractive in appearance to the nearly 50% of adult females and smaller percentage of men in the United States that experience them. These veins are different from varicose veins in that they are smaller and much less painful.

Preparing for Spider Vein Treatment

Prior to treatment, the patient’s skin should be thoroughly clean and dry. One should be sure to remove any make-up, creams, oils, topical anesthetic or self-tanning products. In addition, the treatment area should not be exposed to sunlight or tanning booth light for at least 2 weeks prior to the procedure.

For patients who have had a history of herpes simplex virus and are interested in facial vein removal, prophylactic antiviral therapy may be prescribed.

After Laser Spider Vein Treatment

Immediately following laser spider vein removal treatment, clients may apply a cool compress or gel pack to relieve any discomfort. Any redness or swelling should resolve within a few hours.

For the days following the laser spider vein removal procedure, patients should not scrub or rinse the treated areas with abrasive skin cleansers. In addition, exposure to sun should be prevented by applying SPF sunblock.

Risks & Side Effects of Spider Vein Treatment

Although usually minimal and only lasting a few days, clients may experience some side effects from the laser treatment for spider veins. Specifically, such side effects may include redness, swelling, hyper-pigmentation, blistering and laser bruising in the treated area. For questions regarding short term or any rare side effects, our physicians/aestheticians are available to discuss patient concerns.
