About BLU-U Acne Treatment
BLU-U is not a laser and it does not emit UV light or heat. This unique technology delivers fluorescent light scattered over a large area.
What Causes Acne?
Acne is caused by oily blockages in the skin’s follicles. Naturally occurring Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) feed off of the oil and trigger an inflammatory response which causes large swollen red bumps and other symptoms. The most common acne treatments are antibiotics and/or prescriptions which kill the bacteria. Over time, medications lose their effectiveness due to antibiotic resistance and other factors.
How Does BLU-U Get Rid of Acne?
The BLU-U light activates chemicals which selectively destroy the P. acnes bacteria.

Treating Actinic Keratoses With BLU-U Therapy
The BLU-U light can also be used to treat actinic keratoses, scaly, pre-cancerous lesions that occur as a result of sun damage. Treatment involves application of Leuvlan (a topical medication) to the affected area combined with BLU-U light therapy.
Levulan is an FDA-approved, naturally occurring compound that effectively treats pre-cancerous lesions called actinic keratoses. The medication is applied to the skin and activated by the specific blue light wavelength.
What to Expect
You may experience a mild tingling or burning sensation during treatment for actinic keratoses as the medication is activated by the light. Any discomfort should improve when blue light exposure is removed or shortly thereafter. The skin may be red, swollen or scaly for up to a week after treatment.*
Clearer, More Beautiful Acne Free Skin
For most patients, it will take a series of four to six treatments – spaced about a month apart, to get rid of acne. Typically only one or two treatments is needed to treat actinic keratoses. Our aestheticians will assess your condition and make a specific treatment recommendation.
Please discuss any medications that you may be taking as they may affect your treatment. Women who are pregnant or nursing should not consider the BLU-U acne treatment. The skin will be highly sensitive to sunlight and bright indoor light for about 48 hours after the BLU-U treatment. Sunscreen will not protect against photosensitivity so it is important to minimize light exposure and follow your doctor’s after care instructions.
