What is Botox?

Botox is a popular injectable used for cosmetic purposes to minimize the signs of aging. While it can be used for other medical purposes, it is more commonly known and used to minimize and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. It can be used on several different areas of the face, with the most common treatment area being the top portion of the face, specifically in the forehead area. The popular treatment areas for Botox are the horizontal lines across the forehead, the vertical lines between the eyebrows, the crinkles at the top of the nose, and the fine lines at the corners of the eyes, known as crow’s feet.

While originally used by movie stars and celebrities to help them appear younger, it has become more widely available for the general public, becoming one of the most popular cosmetic treatments for anti-aging. It is formulated using a toxin called onabotulinumtoxinA that works by preventing the muscles that it is injected into from being able to move. While it can be injected into several different areas of the face, it is recommended to keep the number of areas it is used on to a minimum to prevent the face from appearing to be frozen. Working with a trained and certified Botox injection specialist will ensure that the results you get from your treatment are natural-looking, without being overdone.

How is Botox used?

Botox has many different functions, depending on the administration of the injection. It can be used to treat a variety of medical conditions, however, its most common use is for cosmetic purposes, to minimize and prevent the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. It is injected into targeted areas of the face to prevent the muscles from being able to contract, which causes lines and creases to form when a person changes facial expressions, most commonly smiling, laughing, frowning, and squinting. Botox can be used on several different areas of the face such as the forehead, between the eyebrows, at the corners of the eyes, at the corners of the mouth, on the chin, and running from the outer edges of the nostrils to the corners of the mouth, as the most prominent areas.

The areas most commonly treated with Botox injections are in the upper portion of the face, specifically on the vertical lines between the eyebrows, the lines at the top of the bridge of the nose, the horizontal lines in the forehead, and the lines that radiate out from the corners of the eyes called crow’s feet. When injected into any of these areas, the muscles are blocked from being able to contract, which causes the lines and creases to form as the skin over the top of the muscles also won’t move. Existing lines in these areas can also start to smooth out as a result of Botox as the muscle contractions are no longer causing the lines to appear.

How is a Botox procedure done?

Botox is a quick and easy procedure performed in a doctor’s office or certified practitioner’s clinical space. A session of Botox involves several injections of Botox, measured in units, spaced out as needed across the treatment area for maximum effectiveness. Your certified Botox injection specialist will let you know how many units they recommend for you based on the area being treated, the results you are looking for, and how mild or severe the lines and wrinkles are in that area. They will also let you know what results you can expect and how long the results will last. Botox is a temporary treatment, so additional injections will be needed to maintain the results over time.

Your practitioner can let you know exactly what you can expect from your treatment, but typically the area will be numbed with a cream or gel before the injections. Once the injections have been administered, patients can go about their day as normal as Botox has minimal downtime. You can expect some redness and tenderness at the injection site, as well as potentially some minor bruising or bleeding, but this will clear up within a couple of days.
