Restylane® is a family of injectable gels used in nonsurgical facial rejuvenation. The products in the Restylane® family include Restylane® and Perlane®. Depending on your needs and goals, our doctors will help you choose the right dermal filler or combination of treatments for optimal results.

Cosmetic Lip Enhancement

One of the most exciting features of Restylane® is its ability to enhance the fullness and definition of the lips.

Restylane® is the first and only FDA approved dermal filler for lip enhancement in patients over 21 years.

A single Restylane® treatment for lip enhancement can yield great results for up to six months.* No other cosmetic product can give you such great and long-lasting results.

What is Restylane®?

Restylane® restores volume and fullness to the face that is naturally lost with age. Patients who have moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds around the nose and corners of the mouth see dramatic improvement after Restylane® treatment.

Restylane® uses a clear gel formulation of hyaluronic acid (HA), a substance found naturally in the body. Hyaluronic acid is the favored compound for modern dermal fillers, replenishing the areas of the face where the skin’s volume and fullness have been lost.

What is Perlane®?

Similar to Restylane®, Perlane® adds volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds that form around the nose and corners of the mouth.

Also like Restylane®, Perlane® is a clear gel formulation of hyaluronic acid (HA), a natural substance that already exists in the body. The hyaluronic acid in Perlane® is a crystal clear gel that is chemically cross-linked (the long chemical strands are tied together) to delay breakdown by skin enzymes. Perlane® is non-animal-based and free from animal protein. This quality prevents disease transmission. Allergy pre-testing is not necessary.

Long-Lasting Results

In clinical studies, an average of 70% of patients reported noticeable and maintained improvement for six months after a single Perlane® treatment.*

Why Choose Perlane®?

Only your doctor can decide if Perlane® is right for you. The gel particles in Perlane® are generally larger than those in Restylane®, which makes Perlane® a good choice for patients who would benefit from deeper injections

Restylane® FAQs

How should I prepare for treatment?

We recommend that you avoid the use of aspirin, ibuprofen, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, Ginko Biloba, garlic, flax oil, cod liver oil, multivitamins, vitamin A, vitamin E, or any other blood-thinning medication for at least 10 days prior to treatment and for 24 hours after treatment.

This will help to prevent bruising and bleeding. Please consult your primary care physician before discontinuing the use of any prescription medication. We also ask that you remove any make-up in the treatment area prior to your appointment.

What should I expect during my treatment?

You will arrive at the office for approximately one hour prior to the time of your injection. A topical anesthetic agent will be applied to the skin at the site of injection to help diminish any discomfort you may experience. If you are receiving lip enhancement treatment, a Center For SmartLipo physician will also perform a dental block to provide anesthesia to the sensitive lip area. Every effort will be made to minimize your discomfort.

Are there any contraindications to treatment?

Perlane and Restylane contain a small amount of gram-positive bacterial protein. It is made from the streptococcus species of bacteria. A client with a history of allergy to such material can not undergo the injection.

  • We do not perform treatment on pregnant or breastfeeding females.
  • Caution is advised in receiving Perlane or Restylane treatment if you have a history of keloid scar formation.
  • Please inform the Center For SmartLipo & Plastic Surgery staff if you have ever developed a hypertrophic keloid scar after any skin injury or injection.
  • We cannot inject Perlane or Restylane into any area that has cysts, rashes, pimples, hives or infection. The injection would need to be rescheduled once the skin problem has resolved.
  • We advise caution in patients on immunosuppressive therapy. This includes long term oral steroid use.
  • Patients on blood thinners such as Plavix and Coumadin should be treated cautiously due to increased risk of bleeding and bruising with injection.

How can I maximize the longevity of my treatment?

There are various factors that influence the longevity of correction: the specific areas treated, age, amount of sun exposure (remember heat breaks Restylane down faster), ongoing muscle movement (clients with Botox® in the same area may have a longer result) and weight loss. Dehydration should be avoided as Perlane and Restylane require water to stay plump.

When can I return for further treatment?

An aesthetic enhancement can be performed at any time. We recommend enhancing your treatment at five-month intervals to maintain your treatment result.

What can I expect after treatment?

You will experience minor swelling in the area that will last 2–3 days.* As with any injection, there is always a risk of bruising and swelling. We recommend that you complete your treatment at least one week prior to any major event in order to ensure that any potential swelling or bruising may resolve. Most patients feel comfortable returning to regular activities after the treatment of all other skin regions.
